(DONNA) – Heading into their final regular season game of the 2016 season, the Donna Redskins would love nothing more than to end it on a high note.
And what a better way than to do that than to try and capture a win over District 32-5A leader Brownsville Veterans as both teams will tangle on Thursday night at Bennie LaPrade Stadium with game time set for 7:00 p.m.
The Redskins saw their playoff hopes end at the hands of Brownsville Pace last Friday night.
Donna High struggled to get their offense going through most of the first half and found themselves down 20-0.
However, they finally got things rolling thanks to a Joshua Mata touchdown run and were able to cut the lead to 20-7 late in the second quarter.
The Redskins added another score in the third quarter and inched closer to Pace as they were down 20-14.
Unfortunately, the Skins offense couldn’t muster up any more points and fell to 2-4 in district play with the loss.
As for Brownsville Veterans, they got another impressive performance on the offensive side of the ball and improved to 5-1 in district play thanks to a 42-15 win over Donna North last Thursday night. Brownsville Vets was able to pile up 465 yards of total offense and had a big chunk of those come by way of the ground game.
Like he has done all year long, Gustavo Vasquez once again shined for Vets as he finished the night with 190 total yards and added four touchdowns as well.
Vasquez and the Chargers will definitely possess a tough test for the Redskins defense.
But if the Skins can run the ball effectively and chew up a ton of clock, they could limit the touches for Vasquez while trying to keep the Vets offense off of the field as much as possible. Thus putting them in a position to possibly get an upset win and end the season on a high note.
