(DONNA) – Ever since the start of the 2016 Girls Basketball Season, Donna head coach Kevin Kromer has stressed to his team that they need to put the ball in the hole.
In their season opener against La Joya Juarez-Lincoln, the Bravettes showed that all of the focus on building a strong offensive presence seemed to pay off as they pulled off an impressive 45-20 win.
“This was what I expected from these girls on an offensive perspective,” said Kromer. “We have a little more speed and better ball handling talent this year and all of that makes us better offensively.”
“Offense wins games and tonight that was the case for us.”
Donna High’s offense came out of the gates firing as they scored in double-digits in the first quarter while taking a 13-0 lead. Melanie Arenas brought over her dominance from volleyball to basketball and made a huge impact early on by accounting on six of their 13 points in the opening quarter and finished the night with a total of 13.
Juarez-Lincoln turned the tables in the second quarter and finally got something going on offense as they scored six points and went into the half down 19-6.
The second half was all Donna High as they were nailing shots on a regular basis which led to them outscoring the Lady Huskies 26-13.
“I am happy we got the win,” said Kromer. “We were sloppy on a few things and need to clean those up.”
“A bunch of these girls just got here from playing volleyball and it’s going to take a little time for them to get in to basketball form. But they have been working really hard and should be able to catch on quickly.”
