(DONNA) – In his debut as head basketball coach, Manuel Epperson knew his boys were in for quite the challenge against McAllen Memorial.
And what a challenge it was as the Mustangs were firing on all cylinders from the get go and went into the fourth quarter with a commanding 64-30 lead.
However, the Redskins weren’t about to go down without a fight as they scored a game high 27 points in the fourth quarter as opposed to 12 by the Mustangs.
Even though the end result was a 76-57 loss, Epperson was proud that his team showed some fight at the end.
“The kids played hard and put up a heck of a fight at the end,” said Epperson. “The effort was there and we were fortunate to have a great fourth quarter.”
Joel Ramirez led the Redskins in scoring as he netted 21 on the night while Anthony Moreno contributed with 15.
The Skins face another uphill challenge as they travel to Laredo this Friday night to take on an Alexander team that played in the regional tournament last year.
“After facing a Memorial team that went to the third round last year, now we face Alexander who was in the Elite 8 last year,” said Epperson. “We wanted to test the kids’ right off of the bat and see how they stack up against some of the best basketball teams.”
“These games will only make us better and prepare us for district play.”
