(LA FERIA) – It was just a matter of time before Manuel Epperson got his first win as head basketball coach for Donna High.
That time came on Thursday afternoon at the C.E Vail Tournament as the Redskins defeated Athlos 70-62 in overtime giving their first year head coach the victory he had so been waiting for since taking over the program in the summer.
“It feels so good to finally get this monkey off of my back,” said Epperson. “The kids have been working really hard and I knew it was just a matter of time before this win finally came.”
“The boys came out and played really well today and we had two guys score 20-plus points apiece which is big. Now that we gained that first win of the season, hopefully we can start a trend here. As for me getting my first win here at Donna High, it feels good. But to be honest with you, I am happier that the kids got this win. They are the ones that put in the work and truly deserve it.”
Anthony Moreno and Eric Garza were the leading point producers for the Redskins as they each scored a game high 24.
The Skins advanced to the second round of the tournament and unfortunately couldn’t get win number two as they fell to Los Fresnos.
Now they head into Friday set to face Lopez in a guaranteed game at 10:30 a.m.
