(MCALLEN) – Edcouch-Elsa head volleyball coach Ofelia Griffith has been a part of the Rio Grande Valley Volleyball All-Star Game for four years now and has worked with some of the best volleyball players in the Valley.
And while each and every year has been special, Griffith can honestly say this year’s group that she worked with was one she will remember for quite a long time.
“This group was great,” said Griffith. “They developed a great chemistry together and seemed to click on the court.”
“We didn’t have a lot of time to work with them in preparation for this game. But I will say that these girls really caught on fast and were dedicated to the team. Out of the 15 players we had on the East squad, 13 of them came to each and every practice and all of them worked well together. This was a great group of girls and I have to say I really enjoyed working with this group. I will remember them for quite a long time.”
The East squad indeed clicked well together on Sunday and as a result, ended up going out in an impressive fashion by sweeping the West squad 3-0 in the Class 5A All-Star Volleyball Game which was presented by the Tip-O-Tex Officiating Association and held at McAllen Memorial High School.
The East team, which consisted of players in 32-5A, got some solid efforts by the likes of Donna North’s I’Dasha Sorrell, Donna High’s Melanie Arenas and Edcouch-Elsa’s Ale Martinez.
Another player that made an impression in her final game of her high school career was Brownsville Veterans libero Paola Villarreal. Villarreal ended up breaking a record as she scored nine straight points in a row at the game on Sunday.
“Working with these girls was truly an honor,” said Griffith. “The girls went out and executed the game plan to the ‘T’. They went out there and left everything on the court.”
“This was a great send off for the girls and fortunately, we were able to get a win.”
