(DONNA) – Right before breaking the huddle in Tuesday night’s game against Mercedes, the Donna High Bravettes broke the huddle saying, “play hard, play smart, have fun.”

Indeed the Bravettes played hard, played smart and had fun as they pushed the Lady Tigers to the very limits throughout the entire contest.

But in the end, Mercedes hit four big free-throws which ended up being enough to push them past Donna High 54-50.

Many times in the game, the Bravettes were able to fight back from a deficit and overcame a big one in the fourth quarter.

Down by 13 with 5:13 left in the third quarter, Donna High turned on a switch and went on a monstrous 17-2 run which gave them a 47-45 lead late in the fourth.

Mercedes was able to weather the storm and countered the run by outscoring the Bravettes 9-3 the rest of the way which helped them preserve the win.

The Bravettes had plenty of chances to build a comfortable lead as they went to the free-throw line a ton.

Unfortunately, they missed 13 of them which was the difference maker.

“We have been making 100 free-throws a day individually and try to do everything we can to put them in. But it’s a little pressure and a little bit of concentration when it comes to a game situation though,” said Donna head girls coach Kevin Kromer.

“And even though we struggled a bit from the free-throw line, the girls really played hard and pushed Mercedes to the very limits. In my mind, that’s a confidence builder going forward.”

The Bravettes, who now sit at 4-4 in district play, were led by Melanie Arenas who scored a game high 20 points.
