(DONNA) – Donna High senior Aileen Garza has been through some ups and downs over the past two years while playing basketball.
“My sophomore year, we were district champions which was something really special,” said Garza. “Then last year, we saw our playoff chances literally slip out of our hands and I can tell you that wasn’t a good feeling at all.”
Coming into this basketball season, Garza and her teammates were determined to do whatever it took to get back to the playoffs.
“Coming into this year, me and the fellow seniors wanted to do a lot better and take the first step by getting back into the playoffs. We wanted redemption from the year before and would stop at nothing to get in.”
On Tuesday night, the Bravettes had a golden opportunity to accomplish their goal they had set out for since day one by punching their tickets to the postseason if they were to pull off a win against Donna North.
And even though it didn’t come easy, Donna High indeed got the job done and are heading back to the playoffs thanks to a 38-30 win.
“These girls have been on a mission since day one of practice and to see all of their hard work pay off by returning to the playoffs, it’s definitely a good sight to see,” said Donna High head girls basketball coach Kevin Kromer. “The ones that were here last year and experienced the downfall wanted nothing more than to get redemption.”
“Tonight they got that redemption and we are back in the playoffs.”
The Bravettes now improve to 8-4 in District 32-5A and sit tied with Pace for the third spot.
Pace and Donna High will face off in a game with major positing on the line this coming Friday night with game time set for 6 p.m.
