(DONNA) – As district games went by, Donna High head basketball coach Manuel Epperson knew it was just a matter of time before his team was finally rewarded for all the blood, sweat and tears they had put into it.
That reward came on Tuesday night as the young ‘Skins picked up their first district win by defeating Donna North 45-36.
Donna High’s defense caused fits to the Chiefs in the first half as they held them to a total of eight points while countering with 23 on the offensive side of the ball to take a comfortable lead into halftime.
The Chiefs were able to turn things around in the final two quarters by piling up 28 points on offense and at one point, cut the Redskins defense to four.
But Donna High was able to convert on some key free-throws down the stretch to pick up their signature win.
“All of the hard work paid off tonight and I am so, so proud that these kids were rewarded for their efforts,” said Epperson. “Even though we hadn’t won a district game all season, each and every one of the kids showed up to practice and gave it their all.”
“They remained committed to the program never quit despite the circumstances. Tonight was a great night as the place was packed and it literally had a playoff feel. And once the game was over, I told the kids that this win was our playoff win.”
Eric Garza celebrated his 16th birthday in style on Tuesday night as not only was he able to capture a win with his team, he was the leading scorer as he poured in 16 points.
