(RIO GRANDE CITY) – Before Super Bowl III, New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath made a very bold statement in regards to their game against the heavily favored Baltimore Colts.

He “guaranteed” that his team would beat the Colts!

That statement became true as “Broadway Joe” led the Jets to a 16-7 win while capturing the Super Bowl title.

On Thursday night, Donna High head girls wrestling coach Raul Cardenas made a bold statement as well in preparation for the District 16-5A Wrestling Tournament.

“We are going to win it,” said Cardenas.

Cardenas followed in the footsteps of Namath by making his guarantee become true on Friday as Donna High’s girls team won the district title for the first time in school history with a total of 151 points.

“I knew all of the hard work that these kids put into practice was going to pay off and today it did, “said an elated Cardenas. “The determination and emotion that these kids have was not about to be denied and I just knew they were going to go into the district meet and win it.”

“Now knowing that we won this is truly amazing and I am just so proud of the kids.”

Bobbie Jo Vasquez and Precious Hernandez added to the historical day for Donna High as they were the first two girls to ever bring home a district championship in their respective weight classes.

Vasquez won the 148-pound weight class while Hernandez took first in the 215-pound division.

“Bobbie Jo and Precious added to the historical day by winning individual titles and becoming district champions,” said Cardenas. “And the impressive thing about this is both of them are only freshmen.”

Now the Donna High girls will set their sights on the Region IV-5A Tournament which will take place at the AISD Delco Activity Center in Austin on February 17th and 18th.

“We will enjoy this district title today and then get right back to work,” said Cardenas. “Now we will set our sights on regionals and hope to win that one as well.”

“As a team, we will not be satisfied until we win the state title.”

On the boys’ side, Esai Falcon, Mauricio Alvarado, Ryan Montelongo and Eric Guzman led the charge as all four of them placed third in their respective weight classes which led to a fifth place overall finish.
