(DONNA) – Donna High freshman wrestler Precious Hernandez has been selected as the RedskinSports.us Player of the Week for the Week of February 6th through February 10th.

Hernandez had quite the weekend as she not only won the 215-pound weight division at the District Wrestling Meet, but her final win of the day led the Bravettes to winning their first team title in school history.

Hernandez sat down with RedskinSports.us Sports Editor John Cannon for a question and answer session.

JC: Congratulations on being named the RedskinSports.us Player of the Week. Last week, you accomplished such a huge feat by winning your weight class and leading your team to a district title for the first time in school history. What was going through your mind going into your final match?

PH: It was really nervous because the girl I faced was really strong. But I knew I had to be stronger than her and never gave up when I was on the mat.

JC: What were you thinking when coach told you if you win your final match, then the team wins the district title?

PH: It added so much more pressure on me because it all came down to my match. If I would have lost, we wouldn’t have won that title. Thankfully, I won the match and we took home the district title.

JC: How did you beat the girl you faced through the match?

PH: I really don’t know. It all just came to me and all of the hard work and practice just came out. I went on that mat and did everything I had practiced for and everything the coaches had taught me. In the end, I beat her.

JC: Did you win by pin fall or decision?

PH: By pin fall.

JC: What has been like for you since winning the title for your team?

PH: Everyone has thanked me. But to me, it’s not about just that one person that wins and saying that thanks to you we won. All of us together have put in the hard work and we all won this together.

JC: What is your goal going forward?

PH: I want to be the first freshman in school history to place at the state meet.

JC: Do you watch wrestling on TV?

PH: No I do not.

JC: How did you get involved in wrestling?

PH: My coach was my World Geography teacher and he asked me if I wanted to try out for wrestling. I wasn’t really convinced because I didn’t really think it was my thing. But I tried out and now I really like it.

JC: Before you hit the mat, what do you do to pump yourself up?

PH: I start talking to myself and tell myself that I am bigger, stronger and faster than my opponent. And when it’s all said and done, I am going to beat her.

JC: Who would you say is your role model?

PH: Esmeralda De Hoyos. She has been with the wrestling program since it started and has really pushed me to my limits to do better. She helps us all at practice to make us better. Not only is Esmer an awesome wrestler, she is also amazing when it comes to school. She is ranked number eight in her class and I really look up to her.
