(DONNA) – When it comes to pool play in a softball tournament, it’s always good to jump out to a nice lead as early as possible.
On Thursday afternoon, Donna High scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning which gave them a comfortable lead.
Once the hour-time limit was up, the Bravettes lead was enough to secure a 4-2 win over Edinburg Economedes in their first pool play game at the Donna ISD Tournament.
“We stressed to the kids that we need to jump on people early and get as many runs as possible,” said Bravettes head coach Adrian Lopez. “Being able to score those four runs in the first was real important and lucky for us, we held off a comeback by Economedes to win the game.”
Trailing by three going into the top of the third, Economedes had a golden opportunity to make things very interesting. The Lady Jags scored a run to cut the lead in half and ended up loading the bases with no outs.
But then Donna’s pitcher was able to battle out of a jam by striking out the next two batters and got the next batter to field out to salvage the win.
“We were fortunate to get out of that inning and only allow one run,” said Lopez. “It shows that our young girls are maturing and that’s a very good thing.”
“It was very important to get this first win of the tournament and to start things off on the right foot.”
Donna High returns to action tomorrow as they will face Grulla in their second game of the tournament with game time set for 1:30 p.m.
