(DONNA) – Once their regular season game ended on Tuesday night, Donna High head boys basketball coach Manuel Epperson was already in 2018 mode.
“Now it’s time to start preparing for next season,” said Epperson. “Our young guys got a taste of what it was like to compete at the varsity level and now know what’s expected of them.”
Despite a rough season, the Redskins showed a ton of improvement towards the end of the season and even picked up their first district win against Donna North two weeks ago.
On Tuesday night, Donna High played their hearts out against an Edcouch-Elsa team who had already punched their tickets to the playoffs.
And despite suffering an 80-60 loss, Epperson was very happy with the fight his team showed.
“Our kids never quit and played hard,” said Epperson. “We fought back in the game and even cut Edcouch-Elsa’s lead to two at one point in the game.”
“But they were able to hit a big shot and our kids’ heads went down. Edcouch-Elsa had a strong fourth quarter and ended up grabbing the win. And even though we didn’t end the season with a win, I am still very proud of my guys. “
Epperson brings back a huge group as only Joel Ramirez graduates from this year’s team.
“The bar is set high for next year,” said Epperson. “The kids are going to play a lot and we are going to work on a lot of things in the offseason as well.”
“It took them a little while to learn my style of coaching and I can honestly say I did a lot of teaching this year. But the kids are going to be a year older and now know have a grasp of our system. I am excited to get things going again and can’t wait for next year.”
