(DONNA) – Donna High wrestler Aime Velasquez has been selected as the RedskinSports.us Player of the Week for the Week of February 13th through February 17th.
Velasquez had quite the weekend as she went up to the Regional Wrestling Meet and came home with a fourth place finish in the 110-pound weight class.
Thanks to her finish, Velasquez was able to punch her ticket to state for the second straight year.
Velasquez sat down with RedskinSports.us Sports Editor John Cannon for a question and answer session.
JC: Congratulations on being named the RedskinsSports.us Player of the Week and also a Two-Time State Qualifier as well. What did you have to go through this past weekend in order to get to the State Meet?
AV: All my matches were going into the second round, the third round or even into overtime. I just had to fight for it because I wanted to go to state.
JC: What was the level of competition like up there?
AV: For me, the competition was tough. But all of the training I put into it just made me work harder than everyone else.
JC: What is your goal going into the State Meet?
AV: I want to win it.
JC: What do you feel it’s going to take for you to win it?
AV: I am going to have to come every day to practice and train as hard as possible. I want to work harder on getting my moves in and need to put in some extra time because I really want to get first place.
JC: What made you decide to get into wrestling?
AV: My two older sisters were wrestlers and I would see them compete in their matches. It became interesting to me and I decided to get into it my freshman year.
JC: Do you compete in any other sports?
AV: Yes I do. I compete in Volleyball and Track.
JC: Before a match, what do you like to in order to get psyched up?
AV: I like to pray. And then I put on workout music to get pumped up.
JC: Who has been your role model in all of this?
AV: I would have to say Esmeralda De Hoyos. She is our team captain for the wrestling team and has really worked with a lot of us girls. She is my best friend and is a big reason why I have made it this far.
