(CYPRESS) – In her first trip to state, Donna High’s Aime Velasquez got a taste of what it was like as a freshman.
Now as a sophomore, Velasquez planned on making the most of her second trip to state.
“I want to win it,” said Velasquez. “I learned a lot from last year’s experience and now know what I need to do in order to make some noise.”
Velasquez indeed made some noise as she went one step further this year as opposed to getting eliminated from the tournament in two straight matches in 2016.
Velasquez made it to the second round of the consolation bracket as she went 1-2 in the tournament at the State Wrestling Meet which was held at the Berry Center.
The two losses were against some tough opposition as both girls placed third and fourth in the 110-pound weight division.
“As coaches, we couldn’t be more proud of Aime and what she accomplished,” said Donna High head wrestling coach Raul Cardenas. “She competed in three matches and lost to two girls that made some noise in Aime’s weight class.”
“The good thing about it is Aime is only a sophomore and still has two years left with the program. Already she has competed at state two years in a row and is gaining experience and knowledge of what needs to be done at that level. We are going to get right back to work and prepare for next year.”
