(DONNA) – Donna High girls’ powerlifter Victoria Casares has been selected as the RedskinSports.us Player of the Week for the Week of February 27th through March 3rd.
Casares put on quite a show at the Region 5 Division 1 Girls Powerlifting Meet in Edcouch-Elsa this past Saturday as she hit a total of 900 and placed third in the 259+-pound weight class.
Thanks to her total, she was able to qualify for the State Meet in two weeks as a freshman.
Casares sat down with RedskinSports.us Sports Editor John Cannon for a question and answer session.
JC: Congratulations on being named the RedskinSports.us Player of the Week. Did you ever imagine you would be going to State as a freshman?
VC: It’s really crazy. I didn’t think I would make it this far. With my coach’s support and with my friends pushing me to go and compete, it really helped me accomplish this.
JC: What was it about the Regional Meet that made you do so well?
VC: Honestly I really don’t know what happened. It just was my day.
JC: What made you decide to get into powerlifting?
VC: I had made a promise to one of my teachers who just happened to be Coach Garcia who passed away during football season that i would try out for powerlifting. He really wanted me to try out and I felt like I had to stick to that promise that I made him.
JC: Who is your role model on the team?
VC: I would have to say Leena Salinas. She is really small and lifts some big weight. So if she can do it, I know I can.
JC: Do you compete in any other sports?
VC: I tried out for softball. But I decided to stick with powerlifting.
JC: What do you do to get pumped up before a meet?
VC: I talk to my friends and sit to myself while listening to music.
JC: Is there one song that fires you up?
VC: It would have to be “One” from Eminem.
JC: What do you do in your spare time?
VC: I usually go with my brother-in-law who is a trainer and work out more.
JC: What is your goal going into State?
VC: I want to place Second in my weight class.
