(MERCEDES) – Both Tony Hernandez and Oliver Closner IV did their jobs on the mound for their respective teams.
Hernandez did a good job for Donna High as he held the Tigers to three runs on the night.
As for Closner IV, he did a great job as the senior piled up 16 strikeouts while holding Donna High to two runs which ended up resulting in a 3-2 win in favor of Mercedes.
Donna High did make Closner IV work as they kept things close throughout the entire contest.
The Redskins scored their first run on the night in the top of the third which cut the Tigers lead to 2-1.
They added another run in the fourth which tied to game at two.
The Tigers were able to retake the lead in the fifth by adding a run to the board and held on the rest of the way.
“This was a true pitchers’ duel tonight,” said Donna High head baseball coach Joey Ramirez. “Tony did a great job for us and I was very pleased with his effort.”
“But Oliver was lights out and really held our bats at bay. We tried to play small ball in order to get him out of his comfort zone. But we couldn’t seem to put the ball in play and ended up struggling against him. Oliver is a tremendous pitcher and is a Division I prospect and showed it tonight.”
The Redskins head into Friday looking to get back into the win column as they will face PSJA Memorial in a non-district affair.
