(WACO) – Four members of the Donna High Bravettes powerlifting team went into the Extraco Events Center with the same thing in mind as each and every other competitor and that was to go home with a state championship.
However, those same competitors would have also been satisfied with placing in the Top Five of their respective weight classes.
Such was the case for two Donna High lifters as Corina Yanez and Karen Martinez won silver medals in their respective weight classes at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association 2017 State Meet on Friday.
Yanez completed the day by totaling an 845 total in the 123-pound weight class which was good enough for second place. Yanez finished 10 pounds behind Adriana Parez of Georgetown who was crowned the state champion.
As for Martinez, she hit a total of 825 which placed her in second in the 132-pound weight division. Martinez finished 40 pounds less than Skyleigh Sears from Port Lavaca Calhoun who won the state championship.
Two other Bravettes fared well at the state meet as Leena Salinas took eighth with a total of 710 in the 114-pound weight class while Victoria Casares came in seventh in the 259+-pound weight division with a total of 855.
Salinas was able to take home a very prestigious award as she was selected to the 2017 Academic All-State Team.
