(LA FERIA) – With the District 32-5A Tennis Tournament right around the corner, Donna High’s Jennifer Garcia is going into it hot as a pistol.
Garcia has been on a hot streak as she captured her fifth Varsity Girls Singles Title of the season at the La Feria Tournament this past weekend. Garcia defeated Mercedes senior Crystal Werbiski 6-1 and 6-0 in the semifinals and then beat Edinburg Vela’s Victoria Villanueva 6-1 and 6-1 in the finals.
Garcia competed in her last regular season tournament before district and head coach Ramiro Solis said he is very pleased with her progression.
“Jennifer is playing with so much confidence right now and she’s serving well,” said Solis. “She is trying new things and is moving incredibly. We couldn’t be more proud of her performances during this second half of the season.”
“Under windy conditions, she won and hammered her way to the finals while defeated a great player in Villanueva. Now we are going to tweak some things before district play and rest her up a bit.”
Besides Garcia, five other Donna High tennis players fared well as Angel Rodriguez advanced to the Boys Singles Consolation round and lost a tough battle to a Sharyland player by scores of 5-7 and 5-7.
Seniors Diana Martinez and Priscilla Ruvalcaba also performed well as they beat their teammates Caitlin Valerio and Perla De Leon in the Finals of Girls Doubles Consolation 6-3 amd 6-3.
Now Donna High will set their sights on the District Tournament and Solis feels his team is ready to go.
“We should be ready to compete for a third straight singles district championship and my whole team is excited for district play.”
