(BROWNSVILLE) – Once he realized his girls’ tennis team won the individual district title, Donna High head tennis coach Ramiro Solis couldn’t help but be emotional.
“I’m a little choked up,” said Solis. “My kids are years behind in experience but have the toughest hearts. They fight and grind their way against more experienced players and are oftentimes successful.”
“I can say that my coaching staff and I are extremely proud of the effort the kids gave during this second half of the season. The sport of tennis is extremely difficult and it’s year round so I’m proud of my kids for their commitment, dedication, and determination to succeed.”
The Bravettes secured their first Girls’ Individual District 32-5A Championship under Solis’s tutelage at the District Tournament on Saturday at Brownsville Veterans High School.
One of the key pieces to the Bravettes winning the title was the play of junior Jennifer Garcia as she won her third straight district championship in girls’ singles play by defeating Crystal Werbiski 6-2 and 6-4 in the finals.
Garcia will now advance to the regional tournament which will take place at the North East ISD Tennis Center in San Antonio on April 18th and 19th.
“I couldn’t be prouder of Jennifer for winning her third straight girls singles championship,” said Solis. “All three of them came against a tough opponent in Werbiski.”
“She maintained her composure after a shaky start and went straight to work to defend her title. We will see a different Jennifer at regionals this year.”
Also qualifying for regionals is Diana Martinez and Angel Rodriguez as the mixed doubles team took second place.
