Player of the Week: Jennifer Garcia

(DONNA) – Donna High tennis player Jennifer Garcia has been selected as the Player of the Week for the week of April 3rd through April 7th.

Garcia completely dominated at the District 32-5A Tennis Meet this past weekend as she won her third straight singles championship in the girls division.

Garcia sat down with Sports Editor John Cannon for a question and answer session.

JC: Congratulations on being named the Player of the Week. You were able to win a third straight girls’ singles championship this past weekend. Would you say that this one was tougher than the others?

JG: I believe this time was definitely a lot tougher than the other titles I won. My opponent Crystal Werbiski from Mercedes has been playing a lot better and she really brought out the best in me in the finals.

JC: Speaking of Crystal. Both of you have been involved in some classic battles this year. What is it about her that makes her such a tough opponent for you?

JG: All of her strokes are great and she knows how to move me around. She challenges me and seems to make me bring my “A” game every time I go up against her.

JC: When you faced her for the title, what was going through your head knowing that she was going to bring it since she was a senior and wanted to go out on top?

JG: I was a lot more nervous knowing that she was a senior and that this was her last time competing in the district meet. So it’s safe to say that there was a lot going through my head.

JC: You beat her in two sets. What was it about her game that frustrated her in the finals?

JG: I think the fact that I am consistent is what makes her struggle a little. She does take some great shots and knows how to place the ball well to make me move. But I try my best to counter and just give it my all.

JC: Besides you winning a singles title, the girls’ team took home the district title as well for the very first time under Coach Ramiro Solis’s tenure. What was that like?

JG: It feels amazing to know that all of the girls are getting out there and are playing a lot better. We are playing as a team and each and every girl did their part over the weekend to win the title.

JC: Looking forward, the regional tournament is coming up and you have been there before. What are some things you need to work on in order to survive and advance?

JG: I believe I needed to work on being more confident and need to fix up a few little things that will improve my game.

JC: What do you feel your chances are this time?

JG: I feel a lot better going in this time and I want to get past the first round and hopefully can keep going from there.
