(DONNA) – Jennifer Garcia has a very bright future when it comes to the sport of tennis.
Already she has won multiple district titles and has been a two-time regional qualifier as well.
Now as a junior, Garcia has won a third district title and once again made it to regionals.
On Wednesday, the Bravette won her first round match against Eugenia Gomez of Sharyland 6-1 and 6-2 which advanced her to the quarterfinals.
Garcia saw her magical season come to an end in the quarters as she fell to Swati Yarlagadda of Laredo LBJ at the Region IV-5A Tournament which was held at the North East ISD Tennis Center.
Ramiro Solis, head tennis coach for Donna High, was proud of Garcia’s accomplishments and the fact that she got to the quarters.
“Jennifer won her first round match and she became the first player ever that advanced to the regional quarterfinals,” said Solis. “She gave it her best shot but came up a bit short.”
“I’m extremely proud of her effort after such a long season. She ended with five varsity girls’ singles titles, two mixed doubles trophies, and is a three-time district champ as well. Now she is a regional quarterfinalist and was a big part in our history by being a member of the first ever girls’ district tennis championship team.”
Also making the trip to regionals was Diana Martinez and Angel Rodriguez who competed in mixed doubles competition. They ended up battling in a very tough first round match-up against a pair of tennis players from Lanier High School and fell short 6-7 (5-7) and 4-6.
“I am so proud of their efforts with this being their first time at regionals,” said Solis. “Both Diana and Angel almost pulled off an upset after losing in two tough sets.”
“All in all, I am very grateful to have coached these kids and they fought hard at regionals. The not only made Donna High School proud but the entire Valley proud.”
