(DONNA) – Just when Donna High School head tennis coach Ramiro Solis thought things couldn’t get any better, he received some more great news on Tuesday night.
After leading his team to their first individual District 32-5A tennis title under his tutelage and leading his top player Jennifer Garcia to the quarterfinals of the Regional Tournament in the Spring, Solis was named the South Texas Tennis Coaches Association Coach of the Year for Class 5A at the end of the year awards ceremony.
Solis beat out Sharyland Pioneer’s Rick Rivera for Coach of the Year and was shocked when he found out about winning this award.
“I never imagined that I would be Coach of the Year,” said Solis. “I was nominated with the Pioneer coach for this award and honestly thought he would win it.”
“So during the awards ceremony, Coach Rivera and I stepped outside and he told me you got this Ramiro. Your kids worked hard and what they accomplished this year was unbelievable. So when we walked back in, everyone told me that I won the 5A Coach of the Year award. I never imagined this would happen and I owe all of the credit to the kids. They had an unbelievable season and this award definitely puts a stamp on a great season.”
