(LA FERIA) – There are two positive things that Donna High can take out of their contest against Santa Rosa on Wednesday night.
One of them is that they were able to overcome a sluggish start and get hot at just the right time.
The second thing was that they were able to capture an impressive win over the Valley powerhouse as well.
Down 20-13 with 5:18 left in the first half, the Redskins offense went on an absolute tear as they outscored Santa Rosa 27-8 the rest of the way and walked out with a 40-28 win in the final day of the La Feria Boys’ Basketball Summer League.
Eric Garza and Justin Lopez were the two key contributors during that massive run as they scored 12 of Donna High’s 27 points.
Garza led the Redskins in scoring as he finished with 12 points while Lopez contributed with eight points.
The Redskins tested the Warriors underneath the basket as a majority of their points on that run came by way of lay-ups and at the free-throw line as well.
In their final game of league play, Donna High defeated Raymondville 37-25 which had them finish at an impressive 8-1.
“The kids played ball and are still building chemistry together,” said Donna High head basketball coach Manuel Epperson who was watching his team in the stands. “They have really been committed to playing in the La Feria and in the Donna leagues and are getting better in each and every game.”
“I like the fact that they are becoming more aggressive with the basketball and are attacking the basket as well. If we can be aggressive inside, that will open up outside shot which will be a huge plus. Overall I am pleased with what I saw and things are starting to fall in place for us.”
