(DONNA) – The Donna High Bravettes volleyball team got off to a rip roaring start in their first match of the day on Tuesday.
Donna High used a combination of aggressive play and fed off of Weslaco High’s mistakes to cruise to a 25-9 and 25-23 win to sweep the match in both team’s season opener.
“I felt the girls did a good job making the adjustments due Weslaco’s level of play,” said Donna High head coach Cindy Viesca. “We scored a lot of points on free balls and got things going after starting off a little slow because of nerves.”
“We had some young girls get their first taste of varsity today and I thought they looked pretty good. Also the girls we had returning back played well. Overall I was pleased with the effort against Weslaco High.”
In their second match of the day, the Bravettes took on Edinburg Vela and didn’t fare as well as they did against Weslaco High.
“Vela has a very good offensive team and possesses a much faster tempo than Weslaco does,” said Viesca. “We had to make some adjustments and found ourselves down right away in the first set.”
“We did play much better in the second set and had Nicole Rodriguez come up with a huge block that made things interesting towards the end of the game. But Vela ended up scoring the final points of the contest to win the match.”
Viesca said that she saw some things that her team needs to focus on going forward.
“We need to work on our offense and our blocking,” said Viesca. “My plan is to focus on those things and the girls are excited to get back to work.”
